An influential Brooklyn rabbi and onetime chaplain in New York City’s jails who drew notoriety for arranging a lavish jailhouse bar mitzvah for an inmate’s son has pleaded guilty to making false statements in connection with a federal housing fraud scheme

The rabbi, Leib Glanz, a prominent member of the Satmar Hasidic sect, and his brother, Menashe Glanz, had been charged with stealing more than $220,000 over 15 years in housing subsidies from the Section 8 program, which is intended to assist low-income people. Rabbi Glanz, 54, pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor count that carries a maximum one-year sentence; his brother Menashe Glanz, 50, also pleaded guilty to a theft charge that carries a maximum 10-year term. The city’s Department of Investigation had said that the scheme was the largest individual case of tenant fraud it had investigated.
