Black athlete arrested after anti-Semitic tirade outside hotel

Detroit Tigers left fielder Delmon Young has been arrested on a hate crime harassment charge attacking a man in front of a New York hotel and yelling anti-Semitic abuse. Young was standing outside of the Hilton New York, where he was staying ahead of a series with the New York Yankees. Nearby, a group of about four Chicago tourists staying at the hotel were approached by a panhandler wearing a yarmulke, asking for spare change. As the group walked up to the hotel doors Young started yelling "F***ing Jews! F***ing Jews!". It was not clear whom Young was yelling at, but he got into a tussle with the Chicago group along Sixth Avenue. Young scratched a 32-year-old man pushing him to the ground in the hotel lobby. Both Young and the group went inside the hotel, retreating to their rooms, where one of Young's victims noticed several scratches and called police. Officers arrested the player on a charge of aggravated harassment as a hate crime and took him to a hospital because he was intoxicated, while the injured man was treated at the scene by paramedics. Having sobered up Young was then taken to the Midtown North Precinct.
