Crime in South Africa

United Nation statistics show that a South African child is six times more likely than the world average to die an unnatural death. South Africa women are five times more likely than the world average to die unnaturally, South African men, eight times. Rape is an especially awful problem in South Africa. While in most parts of the world, most rapes are non-violent (ie, no assault or torture involved) date rapes, in South Africa over 50% of rapes are violent. And more distressingly still, 40% of rapes involve girls under the age of 18. Guns are also often present when crimes are committed in South Africa. Sixty-two percent of murders in the county are gun murders, which is very high by global standards. In Australia, the percentage of gun murders is 16%, in the USA its 39%, in the UK its 8%, in Chile its 10%, and in India its 20%.
